It’s a lot easier to catch someone up on what’s happened in your life since the last time you talked (e.g. an old friend) than it is to catch someone up on what’s happened in the entirety of your life (e.g. a new friend). Ten minutes spent with someone who knows your context and history can be more fulfilling than spending an hour talking with someone who doesn’t know you at all. Plus, these are likely to be people who knew you before you became a parent, so they have a more full view of you as a person.

Even if you haven’t stayed in touch consistently, there’s success to be had in reaching out to someone you haven’t talked to since college or high school. I’ve heard multiple accounts of people picking up right where they left off, even if years or decades had passed in between. Don’t underestimate the power of reconnecting with an old friend, in person or on the phone.
